About Ainoshima (Cat Island)
A small island off Shingu in Fukuoka, where friendly cats gather around the port and fishing boats. Featured by CNN as one of Japan's cat islands, it is also known as a birdwatching destination.
How to get to Ainoshima (Cat Island)
From Hakata Station in Fukuoka, take the JR Kashii Line to Shingu Station (about 30 minutes), then walk or take a local bus to Shingu Port. Ferries to Ainoshima take about 20 minutes. In spring and summer there are six round trips per day; in autumn and winter, five (adult fare ¥480). Schedules vary by day and season — check the official timetable before you go. Cash is useful on the island, and shade can be limited on sunny days.
- From Hakata Station (Fukuoka), take the JR Kashii Line to Shingu Station. The ride is about 30 minutes.
- From Shingu Station, walk or take a local bus to Shingu Port (新宮港). Allow extra time if you are carrying luggage.
- Take the ferry from Shingu Port to Ainoshima. The crossing is about 20 minutes.
- Once you arrive, start around the port — cats often gather near fishing boats and waiting areas. The island is compact and walkable.
