Kuala Lumpur Cats

Malaysia’s capital where street cats turn up in Little India, Chinatown lanes, and quiet neighbourhood walks.

Before you go

  • KL is hot and humid — early morning and late afternoon are more comfortable for walking.
  • Cats are not guaranteed in the same spot every day — keep expectations flexible.

About Kuala Lumpur Cats

Kuala Lumpur is not marketed as a “cat city” the way Kuching is, but cats are part of everyday street life — especially around the Masjid India mosque and Little India’s jewellery-shop lanes. Chinatown (Petaling Street and nearby alleys) is another easy walking area, and quieter stretches toward Brickfields can bring unexpected encounters. Think of KL as an urban cat-walking stop between cafés and errands, rather than a single colony village.

How to get to Kuala Lumpur Cats

Fly into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) or klia2, then continue to the city by KLIA Ekspres, airport bus, taxi, or Grab (about 30–60 minutes depending on traffic).

Little India / Jalan Masjid India is easy from Masjid Jamek or nearby LRT/MRT stations — then walk. Chinatown (Petaling Street) is a short Grab or walk from the same central area. Grab is the most practical way to hop between neighbourhoods in the heat.

  1. Fly into KUL or klia2 and continue to central Kuala Lumpur by KLIA Ekspres, bus, taxi, or Grab.
  2. Take the LRT/MRT toward Masjid Jamek (or a nearby central station) for Little India / Jalan Masjid India.
  3. Walk around the Masjid India mosque and the jewellery-shop lanes nearby — cats are often seen in this area.
  4. Continue on foot or by Grab to Chinatown (Petaling Street) and, if you have time, toward Brickfields for quieter neighbourhood walks.

Visited April 2024

April 2024 — during a workation in Kuala Lumpur. Around the Masjid India mosque and the Little India jewellery-shop lanes, I found the first cat nearby, then more and more as I looped the area. Chinatown was more for wandering and cafés that day; later near Brickfields I also met a small, friendly cat that followed along for a bit.
