Dubrovnik Cats

A UNESCO-walled Adriatic city where community cats — locals’ “oldest citizens” — nap on warm stone, ATM ledges, and harbour edges throughout the Old Town.

Before you go

  • Cruise-ship days pack Stradun — side streets and early/late hours are better for cats.
  • Let cats sleep on warm stone or ATMs; take a quiet photo and move on.
  • Feeding spots are maintained by locals — leave bowls and shelters as you find them.

About Dubrovnik Cats

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is famous for its walls, Stradun (Placa), and harbour views — and for community cats that locals sometimes call the city’s “oldest citizens.” Cats were long part of port life for rodent control; today they rest on sun-warmed stone, café steps, and even warm ATM ledges along the busiest lanes. An easy walk starts just inside Pile Gate at the Large Onofrio Fountain, then follows Stradun and the quieter side streets. The courtyard around the Serbian Orthodox Church (Crkva sv. Blagovještenja / Church of the Holy Annunciation) is often quieter for spotting cats. Toward the east, the Old Harbour (Stara luka) and the Porporela pier are good for harbour-side cats, especially morning and late afternoon. Volunteers and groups such as SOS Dubrovnik Cats help with sterilisation and care. Observe quietly, keep a respectful distance, and let sleeping cats rest — this is a living old town, not a petting zoo.

How to get to Dubrovnik Cats

Fly into Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), then continue by airport shuttle, bus, or taxi toward the Old Town / Pile area (about 20–30 minutes depending on traffic). Cruise ships and long-distance buses also arrive near the city.

Enter the pedestrian Old Town through Pile Gate (Vrata od Pila). Start at the Large Onofrio Fountain on Stradun, then wander side streets toward the Serbian Orthodox Church area, and continue east to the Old Harbour and Porporela if you have time. Summer days are crowded — early morning or late afternoon are often calmer for spotting cats.

  1. Reach Dubrovnik (airport DBV, bus, or cruise) and head to the Pile Gate area.
  2. Enter through Pile Gate and start at the Large Onofrio Fountain on Stradun.
  3. Wander quieter side streets — the Serbian Orthodox Church courtyard is a calm stop.
  4. Continue east to the Old Harbour and Porporela pier if you have time.
