Kotor, Montenegro
Kotor Cats
A UNESCO-listed Adriatic old town nicknamed the “City of Cats” — street cats lounge in stone lanes, squares, and cafés around Kotor’s walled centre.
Before you go
- Summer cruise days can crowd the lanes — early morning or late afternoon are often calmer for spotting cats.
- The Cats Museum charges a small entry fee; hours may vary — check the official site.
- Feeding stations appear in places — leave them as you find them and observe cats quietly.
About Kotor Cats
Kotor’s walled Old Town on the Bay of Kotor is one of Montenegro’s best-known destinations — and cats are part of its identity. Sailors once brought cats ashore to control rodents in the port; today, community cats rest on benches, window ledges, and café terraces throughout the pedestrian maze. Square of the Arms (Trg od Oružja), just inside the Sea Gate, is an easy starting point for a slow walk through the lanes. You will also see cat-themed souvenirs, murals, and shop signs — part of the town’s playful branding rather than separate landmarks. The Cats Museum (Muzej mačaka) on Trg Gospa od Anđela collects vintage cat art and memorabilia from the 16th century onward; a small entry fee supports the collection. Local volunteers and groups such as Kotor Kitties help with spay-neuter and care for community cats. Observe quietly and keep a respectful distance — this is a living old town, not a petting zoo.
