Visby Cats — Knäcken

A bronze memorial to Knäcken — the red tomcat who ruled Visby’s Stora torget for over a decade — on the wall by the main square.

Before you go

  • Knäcken is a memorial statue — there is no live cat to meet.
  • Stora torget is busy in summer (Medieval Week and cruise days) — visit early or late for a quieter photo.
  • Gotland is an island — check ferry and flight timetables in advance.

About Visby Cats — Knäcken

Visby, on the Baltic island of Gotland, is best known for its UNESCO-listed medieval ring wall — but cat lovers also stop for Knäcken. From the mid-2000s until his death in May 2013, this large red tomcat was a fixture of Stora torget (the main square): lounging on electrical cabinets outside the grocery Torgkassen, begging politely at restaurant terraces, and patrolling “his” square. Locals nicknamed him “Den röde baronen” (the Red Baron) and “Kungen av Visby” (King of Visby).

After he died, residents crowdfunded a life-size bronze by Gotland sculptor Sanny Laurin. Unveiled on Visby Day, 4 October 2014, the statue shows Knäcken resting in his amber-red and white colours on a wall outside restaurant Nunnan, still watching the square. It is a memorial to a beloved town character — not a living cat. The walled old town still has ordinary street cats, but this pin is the statue. Respect the sculpture and the busy square.

How to get to Visby Cats — Knäcken

Fly into Visby Airport (VBY) from Stockholm (Arlanda) and other seasonal routes, or take a ferry to Visby from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn on the mainland (journey time varies by season).

Stora torget lies inside the medieval walled old town — a short walk from the harbour and main gates. The Knäcken statue is on a wall outside restaurant Nunnan on the square (near the former Torgkassen area). The old town is compact and mostly pedestrian — easy to combine with the ring wall walk.

  1. Reach Visby by air (VBY) or ferry from the Swedish mainland.
  2. Enter the walled old town and walk to Stora torget (main square).
  3. Find the bronze Knäcken on the wall outside restaurant Nunnan — free to view year-round.
