Hydra Island Cats
A car-free Saronic island where street cats lounge along the harbor, stone lanes, and seaside cafés.
Before you go
- Cats may be resting on walkways — step around them quietly rather than disturbing their nap.
- Outdoor café cats are common; please do not feed from your table without checking with staff.
- Ferry schedules vary by season — confirm departure times before your travel day.
About Hydra Island Cats
Hydra is a small island in the Saronic Gulf, about two hours by ferry from Athens. Cars and scooters are not allowed — donkeys, mules, and footpaths shape daily life in the port town. Street cats are a familiar part of that scene: resting on harbor steps, weaving between café tables, and watching fishing boats return to the dock. The compact town around Hydra Port is the natural place to start; a coastal walk south to Kamini adds quieter lanes and a second harbor. Local volunteers through HydraArk help care for the island’s cat colonies — spay/neuter programs and feeding support are part of island life.
How to get to Hydra Island Cats
From Athens, take a ferry from Piraeus to Hydra (about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours on a flying dolphin / hydrofoil; conventional ferries can take longer). Rafina port (closer to Athens Airport) also has seasonal services — check schedules before you travel.
Hydra has no airport. Once you arrive at Hydra Port, the town is entirely walkable. Donkeys and water taxis are available for luggage or short hops along the coast. Start around the main harbor and wander the stone lanes uphill; cats are often seen near outdoor cafés and quiet stairways.
- Fly into Athens International Airport (ATH) or reach Athens by other transport.
- Continue to Piraeus port (metro Line 1 to Piraeus, taxi, or bus) — allow time for the transfer.
- Take a ferry to Hydra. Buy tickets in advance in peak season if possible.
- Arrive at Hydra Port and explore the harbor area on foot — cats are often near the waterfront cafés and steps.
- For a longer walk, follow the coastal path south toward Kamini village.
