Tainan Cats

Tainan’s old-town walks and the quiet Taijian dormitory “cat village” in Annan — street cats, cat murals, and a low-key suburban colony.

Before you go

  • Early morning and late afternoon are more comfortable in the heat.
  • The Taijian area is residential — keep voices low and do not enter private yards.

About Tainan Cats

Tainan is not a famous “cat city,” but street cats turn up during ordinary walks — around café streets, parks, and quiet lanes in the old town. Zhengxing Street and nearby alleys have a cat-themed atmosphere with signs and wall art; you may spot a real cat while wandering. Shennong Street and Tainan Park are easy to combine on the same stroll.

Outside the center, Annan District has the former Taijian (Taiwan Alkali) dormitories near Luermen — often called “Tainan Cat Village.” It is a quiet residential pocket of aging wooden houses, not an official tourist village like Houtong. People still live there, so visit gently. (Not yet visited in person for this map.)

Tainan Spot Guide

How to get to Tainan Cats

Take the Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) to Tainan HSR Station, then transfer by TRA or taxi/Uber into the old town (West Central District). From Taipei, HSR takes about 1.5–2 hours.

Once in the old town, Zhengxing Street, Shennong Street, Guohua Street, and Tainan Park are largely walkable. Uber or YouBike help for longer hops in the heat.

For the Taijian dormitory “cat village,” take a taxi or Uber to Luermen Mazu Temple (鹿耳門天后宮) in Annan (about 30–45 minutes from the old town), then walk the nearby dormitory lanes.

  1. Arrive by HSR at Tainan, then continue to the old town by TRA, taxi, or Uber.
  2. Walk Zhengxing Street and nearby lanes — cat signs and murals give the area a feline mood; real cats may appear too.
  3. Combine with Shennong Street in the evening and Tainan Park for a quieter morning walk.
  4. For Taijian dormitory (Tainan Cat Village), head to Luermen Mazu Temple in Annan by taxi or Uber, then walk the quiet dormitory lanes nearby.

Visited April 2024

April 2024 — a short workation in Tainan. I walked Shennong Street at night, worked in cafés, and strolled Tainan Park. Later I found a street with cat signs and wall art that felt like a “cat street,” and finally spotted a real cat (inside a building, so no clear photo). Beef soup, cafés, and cats — that was the mood of those few days. I have not yet visited the Taijian dormitory “cat village” in Annan.
