Before you go
- Only two round trips per day. Check the official timetable for the morning and afternoon sailings before you go — the morning boat usually allows a longer stay.
- Feeding is allowed only at the designated area near the port. Feeding elsewhere is not allowed.
About Aoshima (Cat Island)
A small island off Ozu in Ehime Prefecture, home to only a handful of residents but dozens of cats — often cited as 70–80 or more. Photos of the island's cats went viral on social media in 2013, drawing cat lovers from Japan and abroad. Cats are easy to spot around the port soon after you arrive.
The island loop is about 1.5 km and takes roughly 30–40 minutes at an easy pace. Walk the narrow lanes from the port toward the shrine and enjoy chance encounters with cats along the way.
There are no shops or vending machines on the island, so bring drinks and snacks before boarding. Feeding is allowed only at the designated area near the port. Please take all trash back with you.
From Nagahama Port, the ferry Aoshima takes about 35 minutes. There are two round trips per day. Adult fare is ¥700 one way (cash only). Check the latest timetable before you travel.
How to get to Aoshima (Cat Island)
From JR Iyo-Nagahama Station, walk about 5 minutes to Nagahama Port and take the ferry Aoshima to the island (about 35 minutes). Two round trips per day; adult fare ¥700 one way (cash only). There are no shops or vending machines on the island — bring drinks, snacks, and cash before boarding. Please take all trash back with you.
- From Matsuyama or other cities, take the JR Yosan Line to Iyo-Nagahama Station.
- Walk from the station to Nagahama Port (about 5 minutes).
- Take the ferry to Aoshima. The crossing is about 35 minutes.
- Explore around the port and village paths — cats are often seen near the landing area.
