About Manabeshima (Cat Island)

One of the Kasaoka Islands off Kasaoka in Okayama Prefecture, where cats still stroll around the harbor and village lanes. Once famed for having more cats than residents — reportedly over 300 at its peak — numbers have declined in recent years, but you can still meet cats around the port and settlement.

Famous as a filming location for Gokumonjima and Radiation House, Manabeshima was designated a Japan Heritage site in 2019. In 2010, French illustrator Florent Chavouet published ManabeShima Island Japan, documenting his stay on the island and bringing it to cat lovers worldwide.
