Island

Karatsu, Japan

Kakarajima (Cat Island)

Saga's "cat island" off Yobuko — a short ferry ride where cats roam a fishing village known for camellias.

About Kakarajima (Cat Island)

One of Karatsu's offshore islands in Saga Prefecture, nicknamed a cat island. Friendly cats gather around the harbor and village paths. The island is also known for camellias and as the legendary birthplace of King Muryeong of Baekje. Featured in JAL's cat-island roundup. Day trips from Yobuko are easy when ferry times line up.

An old local saying holds that dogs should not be kept on the island — part of the cultural backdrop for its many cats. Stories about Yasaka Shrine offer several explanations, but none are confirmed.

How to get to Kakarajima (Cat Island)

From Fukuoka or Karatsu, take a bus to Yobuko, then walk to Yobuko Port and board the ferry Kakaramaru to Kakarajima (about 17 minutes). Four round trips per day. Adult fare is typically paid on board (around ¥600 one way — confirm current fare). Cars cannot board; park at Yobuko if driving. Shops and vending machines on the island are limited — bring drinks and snacks. Check the official Karatsu City timetable before you go.
